Dracut Water Supply District Secures Funding for PFAS Treatment and System Improvements

Project loction

The Dracut Water Supply District is pleased to announce that it has secured a State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan through the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust to support critical water system improvements that will ensure continued compliance with evolving federal drinking water standards.

PFAS Removal Plant Project

As part of this initiative, the District will construct a new PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) removal treatment facility. While our water system is currently in full compliance with existing Massachusetts state regulations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established more stringent PFAS standards, with compliance deadlines currently anticipated to extend to 2031.

This proactive investment will position the District to meet these upcoming federal regulations and continue to provide safe, high-quality drinking water to our community.

Infrastructure Upgrades

In addition to the PFAS treatment plant, the project includes several important infrastructure improvements:

  • Installation and rehabilitation of a water transmission main to enhance system reliability and capacity.  All work will take place within the public right-of-way.
  • Comprehensive upgrades to the Lakeview Avenue Pump Station

These upgrades will modernize system operations and allow the District to eliminate two existing pump stations—Makos and Birchmont—resulting in greater efficiency, reduced maintenance costs, and improved overall system performance.

The Dracut Water Supply District remains committed to planning ahead and investing in infrastructure that protects public health and ensures long-term sustainability. These projects represent a significant step forward in maintaining compliance, improving resiliency, and continuing to deliver high-quality drinking water for all customers.

Updates on project timelines and construction activities will be shared as they become available.
